Continuing with my healthy apology to the bicycle, in this issue I want to offer you some important reasons why going to work by bicycle is an excellent idea. They are only five, but each one is worth a million.
It’s fun: unlike the stress, we feel when we go by public transport, taxi or our own car, riding a bicycle provides an enormous sense of freedom, happiness, and tranquility. The above allows us to start the day being more productive, having a smile on our faces, lots of energy and motivation, adding several points in our favor and that of our employer to face a demanding day of work with greater success. It’s healthy: we talked about this in the previous installment, but besides being an excellent and safe exercise that allows you to burn an average of 200 calories every 30 minutes, it is a great means of transportation that takes you quickly and pleasantly to your destination In the process you are taking care of your physical, mental and emotional health, without the additional cost of paying a gym, and well, maybe a psychologist;).
It’s comfortable: riding a bicycle to work is quite practical. I recommend buying a padded seat (I bought one on Avenida Grau for 40 soles), install a basket so you can take some things you need at work (lunchbox, wallet or briefcase, for example) and an extra shirt to change once you get to work.
It’s fast: traffic is getting worse every day. Although many think it takes time, the truth is that it is much faster. But always consider leaving with a little extra time so you do not have to hurry and so you can relax and enjoy your journey more. If you have a work partner who lives nearby, encourage him/her and they could do the route together.
I recommend setting small goals and go little by little. You do not have to drive to work by bicycle every day. Maybe start one day a week and then progressively increase. The first time you could try a Saturday or Sunday and recognize the path and the average time it will take you to get to your workplace. Remember that the shortest route is not always the safest, and you should not only pay attention to the cars, but also to the pedestrians. What I can promise you is that going to work by bicycle is an incredible source of healthy happiness and inexhaustible enthusiasm and well-being.
