Workout gear can be expensive. The last thing you want to do is drop a large chunk of change on clothing that is insufficient to stand up to your rigorous routine. It could be too loose-fitting, too uncomfortable, or too revealing. There are too many reasons why your gear might be ineffective or inappropriate for the gym or studio.
Therefore, before you hit your local retailer or online store, you will want to take these five factors into consideration and avoid spending too much on workout gear you’ll end up never wearing. Let’s be honest, you could probably use some new workout attire anyway. That I love Jesus but I cuss a little shirt can be put aside in exchange for something that is engineered to perform with your body not against it.
- Dress for your WorkoutWhen you exercise, what are you doing? Is cross-training your thing? Weights? Yoga? Running? You may be surprised to hear this, but all workout clothes are not built the same. Some garments are better suited to certain activities and if you try to wear the same attire for all of them you’re doing yourself a disservice. If you swim, you wear a bathing suit. If you’re going to hit the bike, you’re going to want clothing that is comfortable and flexible for that type of exercise. So think before you buy, what activities or classes are you taking? Then buy the right gear for those routines.
- Materials are ImportantAny old cotton shirt or polyester leggings are not going to cut it. Not if you’re serious about your workout and hit the gym with any regularity. When you’re buying gear, fabrics are a major factor to consider because you want your clothing to remain comfortable throughout your workout. So look for high-performance materials that have been engineered to wick moisture, provide total flexibility, and remain lightweight even when you’re sweating profusely.
- Avoid Baggy ClothingThe right gear means ensuring that it fits well and doesn’t hang off of you for any reason. Baggy shirts and sweatpants are just waiting to get snagged on gym equipment or caught in the wheel of workout bike. Not to mention clothes that don’t fit don’t always stay put on your body where they are supposed to remain. You can’t have a good workout if you keep pulling up loose-fitting pants between reps.
- Get the Right Shoes
Flip-flops and bare feet are a definite “no” at the gym. You want a pair of shoes that are going to give you the right amount of support the type of workout you’re doing. Running means running shoes, cross-training means cross-training sneakers. Good shoes provide protection for your feet and other areas of the body like the back, knees, ankles, and so on.
- Test All ClothingYou’ve got new gear and you’re excited to show it off. But before you do, try it on at home first to make sure everything remains where it’s supposed to and nothing is revealed or uncovered as you bend over, twist, reach, or perform any other typical movements.
