A herbal leaf tree belonging to the Rubiaceae family is called Kratom and was first documented by a Dutch colonial botanist named Pieter Korthals. Since the plant greatly resembled a bishop’s mitre, Korthal chose to name it Mitragyna. It can grow about 12 to 30 feet tall and 15 ft. wide. Kratom leaves can grow about 4 inches wide and 7 inches long. These leaves contain alkaloids including 7-hydroxymitragynine, mitragynine and mitraphylline and they serve as mu-opioid receptor antagonist. This function has allowed people to use the plant as an alternative to opiates for individuals who are dependent on opiates.
The therapy is begun with low doses that are decreased gradually and eventually withdrawn. The symptoms of Kratom withdrawal are a great deal milder as compared to opium. Apart from that, Mitragyna is also used as a depressant and a stimulant. It can also be used for increasing sexual activity and has been used for treating various illnesses including diarrhea. Suppressing pain caused by numerous conditions such as migraines is another quality found in Kratom. The effects of the plant can also be used for calming the mind. The leaves of the Kratom plant are either boiled to make tea with it, smoked or chewed.
Due to its effects, Kratom is regarded as a controlled substance in a number of countries including Bhutan, Finland, Thailand, Malaysia, Denmark, Myanmar, Australia, Lithuania and Poland. While these countries are using Kratom, there are others that are still conducting studies on the properties of this plant and the effects it can have. For centuries, Mitragyna speciosa has been used by the natives of Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia because it is native to these places. It has garnered the attention of the health and medical world these days because of the benefits it can provide.
Different laboratories are conducting independent studies for studying the impacts on Kratom when it is consumed by people. Since it has a number of useful alkaloids, pharmaceutical companies have increased their efforts in created Kratom-based pain relievers and medicines. There are certain benefits that people can acquire when they take this plant in low doses. The jungle people used Kratom for restoring their energy as it would make them stronger and more active. The natives in Thailand also used Kratom for dealing with muscle pain and diarrhea. People suffering from hypertension can also benefit from Kratom consumption as it is known to lower blood pressure.
While high dosage of Kratom have also proven to be helpful in dealing with problems like anxiety and depression and other psychological issues, it is recommended that it not be taken frequently. No cases have been documented about people developing an addiction to Kratom, but it is possible that the body may eventually develop a tolerance for the alkaloids found in it. Moreover, in some reports, side effects have been reported, which may not be deadly or severe, but it is better to stick to low doses for enjoying the benefits Kratom products can offer.
