Today, on a rainy and cold day, I thought it useful to speak of aromatherapy and essential oils; I’m a real fan of this “aromatic world” and on days like these are surrounded by scented candles or essential oils into the environment of my house …
But let’s degrees, you know what is aromatherapy? It is an alternative therapy that uses the properties of the essential oils to bring health and balance to the body and mind.
The essential oils have a very complicated molecular structure created by nature and not easily reproducible; They are in fact a mixture of aromatic and volatile substances that are extracted from plants and make the characteristic fruit aroma, spices, herbs, flowers, trees, …
Thanks to the aromas of these essential oils, our sense of smell is capable of communicating with the limbic system and the brain areas that generate emotions (amygdala, hypothalamus, pituitary) with a surprising result: these small aromatic molecules fill us with energy, change our state of mind, balance our emotions, stimulate the production of endorphins, lead us to distant memories …
Can you imagine a life with no sense of smell? Unfortunately, anosmia (loss of smell) exists and those affected describe life as “poor”, where the house does not have smells, the food has no taste, the flowers are not flowers … when we perceive a smell, we are invaded, kidnapped and usually react with an attraction or a repulsion.
In winter, the warmth of the house and a good book is the perfect time to enjoy aromatherapy and all the pleasant aromas that exist in nature. Below, I list the ones I think are the most appropriate at this cold time of year.

How to use essential oils
The essential oils in aromatherapy can really be used for many purposes:
- For a massage
- Like fragrance
- For a hot bath
- To spice up one or more rooms in the house
- To improve the work environment
- To help you rest better
- As natural medicine
Essential oils have an affinity with the skin: the skin layer is able to absorb them in a few seconds and then spread them into the bloodstream where they carry out their therapeutic action. To use them for a massage or as perfume, you have to mix a few drops of essential oil with 5-10 ml of vegetable oil that you like (almonds, wheat germ, jojoba, coconut …).
If you want to use it for a hot bath, just add a few drops to water and thanks to the heat the aroma will spread throughout the room. It is important to know that are not water-soluble (so do not mix with water), they are not recommended in case of pregnancy and in infants and can react with sensitive skin.
To spice up a room, the work environment, the bedroom there are several methods…
- Electric diffuser: ideal for spaces amp, there are different types, but the most recommended, that do not alter the properties of the essential oils, I recommend those ultrasound.
- Diffuser candle: ideal for small spaces and for those who love the candles lit in winter.
- Pan of water for radiators: ideal for winter while it warms the house.
You will see that pleasant feelings will be able to give you that warm atmosphere and be able to create in your home.
