10 foods to avoid if you have psoriasis

Most people know that proper nutrition can have a major impact on health, but it can do much more than changing body weight and energy levels. The healthy eating habits can affect both the weight that the levels of sodium and cholesterol, but also on view, on hair growth until the muscle cramps. One thing that might surprise you is that a healthy diet can even affect skin problems, even serious ones such as psoriasis, a condition characterized by itchy, reddened skin, dry and annoying.

Here are ten foods to avoid and those to be preferred if you are suffering from psoriasis …

What foods to avoid if you are suffering from psoriasis?

Although research has not yet confirmed a direct link between psoriasis and food, sufferers of this skin autoimmune disease often find relief by eliminating specific foods from your diet, such as:

  • Alcohol: Because of its vasodilator effect, alcohol allows T lymphocytes to reach the outer layers of the skin, causing a worsening of psoriasis symptoms;
  • Dairy: May cause inflammation due to the protein casein, closely linked to inflammatory states;
  • Junk food: Rich in saturated fats, trans fats, refined starch and sugar, which promotes inflammation;
  • Seasonings: As ketchup, mayonnaise, Tabasco sauce, vinegar and spices such as cinnamon, curry and paprika;
  • Red meat: highly saturated because of arachidonic acid, which causes inflammation;
  • Gluten;
  • Refined sugars;
  • Citrus: may cause psoriasis outbreaks, especially in people allergic;
  • Fried;
  • Belladonna: that as peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants can worsen the symptoms of psoriasis, due to the high content of a chemical compound known as solanine.

What foods instead preferring, if you suffer from psoriasis?

For those who suffer from psoriasis, there are not only foods to avoid, but also foods to favor and eat often, because they have a positive effect on psoriasis, balance diet and maintain weight control.

The foods to be eaten often are:

  • Fish and seafood, which reduce inflammation and stimulate the immune system, thanks to the omega-3 and fish oil, very important for heart health;
  • Vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, broccoli, spinach and kale;
  • Grains, which contain a lot of antioxidants and fiber, substances closely related to low levels of inflammation and a better balance in blood sugar;
  • White meats such as chicken and turkey;
  • Nuts and avocado, foods rich in so-called “good fats”;
  • Blueberries, rich in vitamin C, manganese and fiber have strong anti-inflammatory effects.

What is psoriasis?

The psoriasis is characterized by a reproduction of epithelial cells ten times higher than normal. This condition is most common between 15 and 35 years, both men and women. It is not contagious and skin lesions are not infectious.

Psoriasis can have different levels of severity, from annoying to extremely severe and causes of injury to the skin, usually located on the elbows, knees, scalp, and palms of hands and soles of the feet.

The symptoms of psoriasis

This autoimmune skin disease characterized by itching, burning and stinging. More specifically, it can cause:

  • Plates reddened skin, often covered with scabs spread of gray. These lesions may be itchy and be very painful, especially when they break and bleed. In severe cases, the irritated skin plaques grow to cover large areas of the body.
  • Nail disorders, such as discoloration and corrosion.
  • Plates spread on the scalp.

Finally, psoriasis is closely involved in psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain and swelling in the joints. According to the National Foundation Psoriasic approximately 10-30% of people suffering from psoriasis also suffer from psoriatic arthritis.

It is worth specifying that any specific or drastic diet change must first be discussed with your doctor, and that power alone should not be considered as a cure or treatment as a substitute for medicines.

Be careful of what you eat is more important, not only in case of more or less serious diseases. In general, adopt a healthy diet and a lifestyle that includes regular exercise, against one more sedentary, it helps to stay healthy longer, reduce stress and live better.
